UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -
Penn State women's lacrosse head coach Missy Doherty collected her third coach of the year honor on Monday morning as she was named the IWLCA West/Midwest Region Coach of the Year. Doherty was previously named the Big Ten and ECAC Coach of the Year.
Doherty joined fellow Big Ten colleague Cathy Reese of Maryland, who was named National and South Region and Coach of the Year, on the IWLCA honor roll Monday. Jen Adams of Loyola (Mid-Atlantic Region) and Syracuse's Gary Gait (Northeast Region) rounded out the Division I honors.
Penn State's 16-win season marked its highest win total since 1989, while the team reached its third NCAA Quarterfinals in four years under Doherty. The Nittany Lions finished 16-5 overall with a final IWLCA national ranking of fifth.
Penn State has made four consecutive appearances in the national tournament for the first time since 1991. Doherty was tabbed Big Ten Coach of the Year for her team's championship performance as the Nittany Lions earned their first conference tournament title.
