HAMPTON ROADS, Va. -- The No. 7 Penn State field hockey team scored first and outshot No. 16 Old Dominion 16-8, but the Lady Monarchs rallied for 2-1 victory over the Nittany Lions, Friday evening at Powhatan Complex.

Old Dominion (1-0) took advantage of their penalty corner opportunities to score both goals. Victoria Rezette scored the game-winner with five minutes, three seconds remaining by deflecting a Megan Byas shot into the back of the cage. ODU goalkeeper Kelly Weaver made 10 saves, including a point-blank shot in the final seconds, to limit Penn State (0-1) to just the one goal.

The Nittany Lions would strike first with a goal from Stephanie Hussey (Miami, Fla.) on a close-range backhand shot to go up 1-0 in the game's 27th minute, but Old Dominion would even it up at 1-1 on a goal from Emily Harting, assisted by Chrissy Horn and Catalina Barahona off a penalty corner, less than four minutes later.

"We had a good first half, we left a lot of balls sitting in front of the goal cage but I do think it was a competitive game," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss. "We knew it was going to be a competitive game going in and I think when we have those opportunities to find the cage, we need to finish. Heading into the game against Virginia we'll make some changes to have a consistent second half and ways we can better communicate."

Penn State would come out of the half on the attack. Kirsten Gochnauer (Mount Joy, Pa.) hit the post with a shot early on, and the offensive pressure led to five-straight penalty corner attempts, but the Lions were unable to score.

"Coming into the game we had a few goals," said Morett-Curtiss. "The first was to keep the field spread and keep the passing game going which I think we did a great job of doing the first half, our second goal was to step up and play tough defense I think we did a great job of doing that the first half, not so much the second half."

Penn State will travel to Charlottesville, Va. for a Sunday match against Virginia at 12 p.m. ET from University Hall Turf Field.
