ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The No. 18 Nittany Lion field hockey team would lead from start to finish notching their third win of the season against Kent State (1-5) Saturday afternoon in a neutral site game at Phyllis Ocker Field.
"We came out with more intensity, more focus, as individuals, and as a team," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss.
Penn State (3-4, 0-1 Big Ten) would get on the board early as Aurelia Meijer (Hattem, Netherlands) would float a shot over the goalkeeper to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead 14:57 into the first half.
"I moved Aurelia and Katie Dembrowski (Palmyra, Pa.) back to the right side which I think allowed us a better opportunity to attack form the right side," said Morett-Curtiss.
Kirsten Gochnauer (Mount Joy, Pa.) would net the second goal from the left side of the circle, assisted by Carly Celkos (Berlin, N.J.), to extend the lead 2-0 heading into halftime.
Penn State would hold Kent State scoreless until the Golden Flashes were able to find the back of the cage on an unassisted goal from Alison Harmatz who drove into the circle from the left side to put Kent State on the board with 6:41 left in the game.
Kent State was unable to score again as the Lions would close the game out by a final score of 2-1.
The Nittany Lions led in shot attempts (12), penalty corners (5), and freshman goalkeeper Jenny Rizzo (Hershey, Pa.) recorded a game-high seven saves.
"Gini Bramley (Elizabethtown, Pa.) played really well and kept the ball out of trouble, it was just a much better team performance today. They stepped up and played tighter as a defense which was a big improvement from yesterday, also we possessed the ball a lot better in the backfield," said Morett-Curtiss.
The Nittany Lions will return to University Park to face off against Big Ten opponent Michigan State Friday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.
