UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State women's golf competed against seven other teams in the qualifying round of the East-West Match today. At the end of continuous play of 36-holes, the Nittany Lions finished with a score of 305 plus-17, and sit in 7th place.

The Lions finished outside of the top four spots and did not qualify to compete in the championship bracket but will be playing UC Davis in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. The winner of that match-up goes on to play the winner of Wisconsin vs. SMU.

Senior Halley Morell (Brecksville, Ohio) led the team shooting 74 plus-2 and is tied for 17th with two other players.

Sophomore Ariana Coyle Diez (Mount Merrion, Dublin, Ireland) was right behind Morell with a score of 75 plus-3 and sits tied for 20th on the player leaderboard.

The newcomers Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) and Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) playing in only their third career collegiate tournament have already proven that they can compete. Rogowicz finished the day at 77 plus-5, while Waller posted a 79 plus-7.

Senior Grace Chung (Richmond Hill, Ontario) was the fifth player that competed in the tournament for Penn State. Chung finished the day shooting 80 plus-8.

The University of Michigan was the only team to finish under par after the first two rounds. The wolverines shot 284 4-under and are eight strokes ahead of the two second placed teams.

A shocking note, the defending East-West Match champions Southern Methodist University finished last in the qualifying round with a score of 306 plus-18.

Teams will begin match play based off of their qualifying round seeding tomorrow at 9 a.m.

For the championship bracket, the first seed plays against the fourth seed, while the two and three seeds square off. The consolation bracket is the same format with the fifth seed playing the eighth seed, and the six and seven seeds competing.

Winners and losers of the semifinals will move onto play each other in the final round of both brackets.
