UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State women's golf made the best out of missing the championship bracket in the qualifying round for the East-West Match by edging out previously fifth seeded UC Davis 3 to 2 in match play.
The Nittany Lions are scheduled to face-off against SMU tomorrow in the finals of the consolation bracket. Winner will receive fifth place in the tournament.
Newcomer Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) had a great start to the semifinals, winning four out of the first five holes she played. Waller rode that hot start the rest of the way and won her match 4 and 3.
Sophomore Ariana Coyle Diez (Mount Merrion, Dublin, Ireland) played an excellent round of golf leading her opponent wire-to-wire. Diez also won her match 4 and 3.
Senior Grace Chung (Richmond Hill, Ontario) needed all eighteen to win her match 1 up. Chung was down two heading into her second nine, but her experience prevailed and helped cement the victory for Penn State.
Senior Halley Morell (Brecksville, Ohio) and newcomer Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) both came up short in their match play losing 4 and 3 to their opponents.
Colorado University was the only higher seed to win their semifinals match-up and will be playing the Oregon Ducks in the East-West Match play championship.
Penn State and SMU will tee off at hole 10 tomorrow at 9:33 a.m.
