Nittany Lions Complete First Day at ITA Regionals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Oct. 15, 2015 -- The Nittany Lions finished their first day at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regionals in Lynchburg, Va. The tournament is planned to go through Monday, October 19th. 28 teams are to compete in the ITA tournament at the Liberty University campus.

Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated Sophia Bernard of Georgetown 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, Shukow lost the last round of qualifiers to Ivana Vukovic of Old Dominion 6-2, 7-5. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) lost to Sansitha Nandakumar of Virginia Tech 6-2,6-1. Zuhse then fell to Rachel Morales of Marshall 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles action Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) defeated Sara Komer and Arielle Shuren of University of Delaware 8-0. Jacqueline Zuhse and Katherine Whiteaway were defeated in a tightly contested 8-4 match by Audrey Ann Blakely and Gabrielle Rezende of the University of Pittsburgh.

All six players at Regionals are scheduled for singles action tomorrow. McCluskey and Blik will compete in main draw doubles tomorrow, October 15th, with a chance of additional doubles matches played as well.

"The first day of Regionals always means a lot of play. Tomorrow will be the same deal so we need to get ready to compete against quality competition," said Coach Cagle, "I am excited to see what tomorrow holds for our team with a number of singles and doubles matches."
