UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; October 17, 2015 ââ'¬" The first day of the Nittany Lion Cup came to a close with Penn State fencers sweeping nearly all three events. Penn State took the top-three spots in epee and sabre, with two Nittany Lions taking home second and third in foil.

While Penn State was well represented throughout the tournament, all fencers competed unattached, meaning they competed as individuals and not representing their school or club.

Freshmen Samuel Freiman (The Woodlands, Texas) and Joshua Cole (Chappaqua, N.Y.) took home first and second respectively in mixed epee, with junior Patrick August (Las Vegas, N.V.) finishing in third place.

The Nittany Lions had an outstanding performance this afternoon on mixed sabre. Penn State fencers swept the competition, taking the top-three spots in the event. Senior Kaito Streets (Redwood City, Calif.), freshman Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.) and sophomore Khalil Thompson (Teaneck, N.J.) took home first, second and third, respectively.

Penn State found success in the mixed foil competition as well. Senior Clarisse Luminet (Lyon, France) finished second on the day and freshman Julian Fevry (St. Albans, N.Y.) came in third place.

Tomorrow the Nittany Lion Cup wraps up with the women's epee, sabre and foil competitions. Bouts start at 10 a.m. in the White Building.
