BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -The Penn State field hockey team led Indiana in every stat category, but the Hoosiers escaped Sunday afternoon's game with a 1-0 victory over the Nittany Lions.

"I told the kids it's disappointing we didn't get the result because I felt it was one of our better field hockey outings," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss.

Indiana's Sydney Supica scored her first goal of the season on a penalty corner at the end of the first half with no time on the clock, assist by Kate Barber, to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead going into the half.

The Nittany Lions were down a person down during the final minute of the first half after a green card.

"The team played with great energy, we just had a breakdown at the end of the first half where we really needed to contain the situation and we didn't do that," said Morett-Curtiss."

"We gave up the corner, and that was a moment in the game when we really needed to contain the situation, especially being down a person"

Penn State attempted a game-high 17 shots and six penalty corners, while limiting Indiana to 12 shots and four penalty corners.

This is the first win for Indiana over Penn State since 2009, when the Hoosiers pulled off a 3-1 win over the NIttany Lions in the Big Ten Conference Tournament.

Aurelia Meijer (Hattem, Netherlands) attempted a game-high nine shots - five on goal - and gave the Nittany Lions their best shot to tie the game with two minutes left in the second half when she dribbled the ball in the circle right up to the goal before passing it to Gini Bramley (Elizabethtown, Pa.) whose shot was blocked by a defender.

"Aurelia made a great move around the goalie she beat the goalie and pushed it over to Gini and the goalie was right there. We were knocking on the door; we just have to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net. Great effort by our kids, we had great energy going into the game and throughout the game. We had a lot of nice possession passes, and put the ball in the scoring circle just couldn't score," said Morett-Curtiss.

"The difference was really us putting the ball on cage, we had a lot of shots but not as many as we needed to get on net."

Penn State will return home to host Iowa Friday Oct. 23 during field hockey Senior Day. The game against the Hawkeyes will be broadcast on BTN.
