PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Penn State women's soccer team recorded a 1-0 loss to Rutgers Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. The Nittany Lions fall to 11-3-2 (6-2-1) on the season, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 12-2-2 (5-2-2).
Neither team was able to find the back of the net during the first 45 minutes of play. During the opening frame, both teams recorded five shot attempts.
In the first 15 minutes of play, Penn State tallied two scoring chances. In the 14th minute, Megan Schafer (Langhorne, Pa.) recorded a shot, but it went wide right of the net and a minute later, Casey Murphy stepped up for her first save of the match on Charlotte Williams (Rochester, N.Y.).
Less than three minutes later, Penn State received a pair of corner kicks, but the Rutgers defense kept the Penn State offense off the board.
During the second half, Rutgers out-shot Penn State 8-4, including the game-winner in the 52nd minute. Colby Ciarrocca connected on a left-footed shot from six yards out into the upper-left corner of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Looking for the equalizer, Murphy tallied her final save of the day on Marissa Sheva's (Sellersville, Pa.) shot in the 64th minute.
Britt Eckerstrom (Germantown, Md.) made five saves for the Blue and White, while Murphy tallied three saves for Rutgers.
The Nittany Lions continue their three-game road trip Saturday, Oct. 24, against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
