BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. - The 11th-ranked Penn State men's golf team sits in first place after day one at the inaugural Mountaineer Intercollegiate Monday at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The Nittany Lions led the 14-team field throughout the day, finishing 6-over during a chilly day on the course.
All five individuals are ranked in the Top 30, led by Cole Miller's seventh-place standing after an on-par performance. His round was highlighted by an eagle on hole eight to put the New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, product 1-under where he stayed until the 18th when his lone bogey of the back nine put Miller at 72.
Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) is one stroke behind in a tie for eighth, followed by Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) with a 74 and in a tie for 14th place. JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) and Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) round out the Nittany Lion golfers with scores of 75 (T23rd) and 76 (T28th), respectively.
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after low temperatures and frost delayed the start of day one. Players will tee off with a shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday for the final 18 holes.
Penn State is paired with Connecticut, Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green as the top four teams in the tourney heading into day two. The individual leader is Marshall's Clark Robinson (-3), followed by Otto Black (Toledo), Davis Baxter (Cincinnati) and Brett Rinker (Bowling Green), all at 2-under.
Live scoring will be available from Golfstat throughout the day Tuesday.
