UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -
Penn State field hockey fell to No. 8 Maryland, 1-0, on Friday afternoon in a Big Ten Conference match up at Field Hockey Complex.

Penn State (5-7, 1-3 Big Ten) yielded the games only goal to Maryland (11-3, 5-0 Big Ten) in the 19th-minute of the first half on a shot by Alyssa Parker from right in front of the goal off an assist from Lein Holsboer.

Maryland, ranked No. 9 in the nation in goals per game, was allowed one lone goal by the stingy Nittany Lion defense that also held the Terrapins below their season average in shots (15) -- Maryland averages 20.8 -- and penalty corners (2) -- Maryland averages 7.15 per game.

"They fought hard all game long, I'm proud of them," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss. "Our defense did a lot of great things today; even our (midfielders) were fighting and stepping up."

Freshman goalkeeper Jenny Rizzo recorded seven saves, including a shot by Sarah Sprink from point-blank to keep the terrapin lead at 1-0 in the 34th-minute of the first half.

"Jenny Rizzo had some great saves," said Morett-Curtiss. "I thought that every kid on that field competed today," said Morett-Curtiss.

While the first half was a shootout with both teams combining for 19 shots, the second half was the exact opposite, as Penn State and Maryland would combine for only five shots in the second half.
"This gives us great confidence, but at the same time you can't Lock Haven for granted, They're having a great year and they're very talented," said Morett-Curtiss."We have to get back on track, but (Maryland) is sitting at the top of the conference and I'd say we were right there with them today."
