Underclassmen Fencers Seal Quarterfinal Finish on Day One of North American Cup

RICHMOND, Va.; October 9, 2015 ââ'¬" The men's fencing team finished the first day of the North American Cup with two underclassmen advancing to quarterfinals in men's sabre. Across the board the Nittany Lions had a strong performance, sending six of eight fencers past the preliminary round.

Sophomore Eduardo Azueta (Queretaro, Mexico) and incoming freshman Karol Metryka (Linden, N.J.) were the furthest advancers for Penn State, both reaching the quarterfinal round of the competition and placing seventh and eighth, respectively.

The second and third rounds of the competition saw Penn State versus Penn State match-ups. Sophomore Khalil Thompson (Teaneck, N.J.) finished in 37th place after being edged by Metryka in the second round of the tournament.

Metryka then went on to defeat fellow Penn State freshman Marcel Dolegiewicz (Park Ridge, Ill.) in the third round. Dolegiewicz placed 22nd.

Freshman Gavin Turner (Rehoboth, Mass.) ended the evening in 20th place, and senior Adam Lewicki (Oakland, N.J.) finished in 25th.

Sophomore Jarrett Lewis (Montclair, N.J.) and freshman Bradley Devito (Ridgefield, Conn.) did not advance past the preliminary round.

Penn State will be competing at the North American Cup tomorrow in men's foil and women's epee.
