PITTSBURGH - The Penn State women's hockey team rallied back in the third period to tie Robert Morris, 2-2, Friday night at the 84 Lumber Arena. The match-up featured two of the top goalies in the CHA, as Jessica Dodds and Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, Calif.) were near the top in almost every goalie category in the conference.
Robert Morris (7-4-2, 3-1-1 CHA) scored both its goals of the night on the power play. Midway through the first period, Amber Rennie lit the lamp to give the Colonials the 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Hannah Bramm (Tampa, Fla.) netted her first goal of the 2015-16 campaign to even the game at one.
After the first period of play, both teams were tied at one with Penn State (3-7-3, 0-2-3 CHA) holding an 11-5 shot advantage. The Colonials responded early in the second period on Brittany Howard's seventh goal of the season. RMU held a one-shot advantage on PSU in the second frame (12-11).
Despite being outshot 11-8 in the final frame of regulation, the Nittany Lions evened the game at one on Laura Bowman's (Minnetonka, Minn.) fifth goal of her junior season midway through the period. High school teammate Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded her sixth assist of the season, while freshman Meike Meilleur (Marquette, Manitoba) netted her second career assist on the Bowman goal.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net the third period. In overtime, both teams tallied three shots apiece and both goalies were able to keep the tie intact.
Whitlinger made 29 saves, while Dodds made 31 saves for RMU. Dodds currently leads the CHA with 332 saves.
Both teams return to the ice tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. at the 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
