KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Nittany Lions closed out their final day of competition at the North American Cup this evening, finding success in the junior men's sabre event. Freshman Marcel Dolegiewicz (Park Ridge, Ill.) captured the top spot for Penn State, winning the competition.
Dolegiewicz cruised through pool play, winning four of his five preliminary bouts. Dolegiewicz entered direct elimination play as the 40th of 153 seeds, and battled hard to earn a spot in the final round of competition. In his final bout, Dolegiewicz won with a score of 15-12.
Freshmen Gavin Turner (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Bradley Devito (Ridgefield, Conn.) also competed in the junior sabre event. Both Turner and Devito advanced to direct elimination play.
Turner advanced to the third round and finished 57th on the day, and Devito went through two rounds and ended in 65th place.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action Dec. 4 through Dec. 7. A few fencers will also travel to Baltimore to compete in another round of Olympic trials, with the majority of the team travelling to Fairfield, Conn. for its first collegiate duel of the season between Sacred Heart, Princeton, Harvard, NYU and Vassar on Dec. 6.
