UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State field hockey freshman Aurelia Meijer (Hattem, Netherlands) and Haley Kerstetter (Selinsgrove, Pa.) each earned Big Ten recognition, the conference announced Wednesday.
Meijer, the Freshman and Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 27, earned her first first-team All-Big Ten selection. This season, she is tied for second on the team with six goals, leads the team with five assists and second with 17 points. The six goals and 17 points are season-highs for the Hattem, Netherlands native. She had a career-high six points on a personal-best three goals against Iowa on Oct. 23. She leads the Nittany Lions with 41 shots on goal in 2015.
Senior captain Haley Kerstetter (Selinsgrove, Pa.) was named Penn State's Sportsmanship Award honoree this season. Kerstetter has played in 14 games this season, helping the Nittany Lions hold opponents to just a 3.5 penalty corner attempts per game in 2015. The Sportsmanship Award is granted to a student-athlete who has distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior while also maintaining good academic standing and demonstrating good citizenship outside of the sport.
The Nittany Lions are back in action at the Big Ten Tournament, taking on No. 3 seeded Indiana in Bloomington, Ind. Thursday, Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
