BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - No. 6 seed Penn State suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament semifinals, falling to No. 2 seed Michigan, 2-1, in overtime Friday afternoon at the Indiana Field Hockey Complex.
After a scoreless first half Kirsten Gochnauer (Mount Joy, Pa.) put Penn State (9-10) on the scoreboard early in the second on a penalty corner, as she gathered the rebound from a shot by Carly Celkos (Berlin, N.J.) and tipped it back into the goal.
The next 31:56 was a scoreless battle of field position between the two teams up and down the field, but a late Penn State red card and an empty net effectively gave Michigan (17-3) a two-man advantage in the final minute.
Leah Cardarelli took advantage, tying the game for the Wolverines with just 45 seconds remaining on a goal assisted by Carly Bennett.
Overtime would see Michigan's Katie Trombetta score early in overtime with help from Emma Way.
Defense ruled the game, as shots were 17-7, and penalty corners 5-3, both in favor of Michigan. Michigan's goalie made three saves and Jenny Rizzo made three as well.
