Radanovich Ties for Third Place at Garret Penn State Open

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The first day of competition at the 43rd annual Garret Penn State Open finished today, seeing junior captain Jessie Radanovich (Tollhouse, Calif.) tie for third place in the epee event. Radanovich was the highest placing Nittany Lion in the first day's competition, with Penn State seeing top-10 finishes on each weapon in the women's event.

Freshmen Nicolette Vigna (Thornwood, N.Y.) and Anastasia Kalonji (Rennes, France) also represented Penn State in the top-10 on epee. Vigna finished the competition in ninth place, and Kalonji took home 10th. Junior Sarah Waller (McKinney, Texas) and senior Jessica O'Neill-Lyublinsky (North Salem, N.Y.) ended the competition not too far behind, taking home 11th and 14th, respectively.

Freshman Alissa Hofmann (Cambridge, Mass.), sophomore Julia Higson (State College, Pa.) and freshman Shelby Kaplan (Niantic, Conn.) did not advance past pool play in the epee event.

On foil, senior Clarisse Luminet (Lyon, France) and junior Desree Ortega-Furgeson (Wyoming, Mich.) were top-10 finishers, ending in eighth and ninth, respectively.

Remaining Penn State foilists, juniors Daniella Ortiz (Bayside, N.Y.) and Tiffany Adrien (Hollis, N.Y.) did not advance past pool play in the competition.

The Penn State women's team also celebrated a top-10 finish in the sabre event. Sophomore Kathryn Charpin (Setauket, N.Y.) and freshman DeAna Oliver (Montclair, N.J.) ended the day in seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Freshman Erin McLoughlin (San Jose, Costa Rica), senior Brianne Cavaliere (Wayne, N.J.) and junior Jacqueline Rozpedowski (Flemington, N.J.) did not advance past pool play in the sabre event.

The Penn State men's team will compete tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m. with foil and epee events. Sabre bouts will begin at 11 a.m. All action will be held in the White Building.
