Nittany Lions Fall in CHA Contest

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Penn State women's hockey team dropped a 3-1 contest to Syracuse Friday night at the Tennity Ice Pavilion. Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored the lone goal for the Nittany Lions in the second period.

Syracuse (8-9-1, 5-1-1) netted the first goal of game with under five minutes left in the first period. Behind Nicole Ferrara's ninth goal of the season, the Orange went into the first intermission with the 1-0 advantage, despite being outshot, 9-3.

Then in the second period, the Nittany Lions (4-10-3, 1-3-3) knotted the game up at one off of Petersen's third goal of the season at the 15:10 mark. Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) was credited with an assist on Petersen's goal.

Heading into the final frame of regulation, the score was tied at one with Penn State outshooting Syracuse, 14-13.

Behind a strong third period, Syracuse tallied a pair of goals to capture the 3-1 victory. Syracuse outshot Penn State, 10-2, in the final twenty minutes of regulation.

With the 3:37 left in regulation, Jessica Sibley netted her sixth goal of the season to tally the go-ahead goal and then with 10 seconds left in regulation, Emily Costales sealed the victory with an empty net goal.

In net, Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, Calif.) made 20 saves for the Nittany Lions. Penn State went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Syracuse went 0-for-2.

The two teams return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. inside the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
