UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- February 14, 2016 -- The Penn State women's tennis team defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 4-3, today in Richmond, Va.
Penn State fell in doubles action and sacrificed the doubles point, Head Coach Chris Cagle and his squad then turned things around by taking over the singles lineup and won four singles matches to secure a 4-3 win for the Nittany Lions.
"Our team has been battling and today we broke through in many ways," said Cagle, "We lost a close doubles point and then came back to take four of six singles matches. I am really proud of the way we competed and did not get down after the doubles point. Credit to our team! Now we will get ready for Columbia next weekend."
In singles action, Kimberly-Ann Surin (Montreal, Canada) defeated Olga Barshcheuskaya 7(7)-6(0), 3-3. Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) fell to Anna Rasmussen 7-5,6-2. Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) beat Darya Berezhnaya 6-3,6-4. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated Magda Aubets 6-3,6-4. Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) won over Sofia Segerfors 6-1,6-4. Kelly Mengel (Pittsburgh, Pa) was defeated by Janina Braun 6-1,6-1 to close out singles action.
In doubles play, McCluskey and Blik fell to VCU duo Barshcheuskaya and Berezhnaya 6-4, partners Zuhse and Whiteaway were defeated by Rasmussen and Braun 6-1. Surin and Mengel defeated Sofia Segerfors and Magda Aubets 6-2.
