UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa; February 20, 2016-The Penn State women's tennis team was defeated today by No. 50 Columbia, in New York, NY., dropping a 7-0 meeting.
Penn State went into four three-set matches before being defeated in singles play. In doubles action, the Nittany Lions fell and sacrificed the doubles point.
"We lost to a strong Columbia team today," said coach Cagle, "They played well in a very competitive environment. The score may be one sided but we had a number of close three-set matches that we battled in and could have gone either way. We will learn from this experience and get ready for next weekend."
In the No. 1 singles match, Kimberly-Ann Surin (Montreal, Canada) was defeated by No. 53 Kanika Vaidya 6-0,1-6,7-5. In No. 2 singles play Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) lost to Rima Astrian 6-4,3-6,6-4. Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) was defeated by Star Makarome in the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-0. No. 81 Alexandra Solovyev defeated Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the No. 4 match 6-4, 6-4. Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) fell in her No. 5 singles match against Andrea Kevakian 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. In the No. 6 singles match Vivian Cheng defeated Samantha Tutelman (New York, NY) 5-7, 6-2, 3-0(unfinished).
In doubles action, in the No.1 match McCluckey and Blik fell to Columbia duo Solovyev and Astrian 6-2. In the No. 2 doubles match, Vaidya and Milstein defeated Zuhse and Whiteaway 6-3. Partners Surin and Tutelman went unfinished in their No. 3 doubles match against Makarome and Kevakian, 4-3.
