UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" Penn State opened competition at the Big Ten Men's Swimming & Diving Championships Wednesday evening, competing in a pair of relays in Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Nittany Lions rank ninth with 84 points after the first of four days of racing.
The Nittany Lions saw their best performance in the 800 freestyle relay as the team of Matt Stasiunas (Avondale, Pa.), Ryan O'Neill (Howell, Pa.), Joao Cervone (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Bob Bantley (Maple Glen, Pa.) finished in an NCAA B-cut time of 6:24.59 to place fifth, making the quarter the second fastest in Penn State history.
The Lions opened the night with the 200 medley relay, with the team of Tomer Zamir (Gesher Haziv, Israel), Andrew Schuehler (Camden, N.J.), Matt Grillo (Montreal, Quebec), and Bantley in a season-best 1:27.53.
No. 5 Michigan placed first in both relays to lead the field after the first day.
The meet continues Thursday with morning preliminaries starting at 11 a.m. and evening finals at 6:30 p.m.
