SOMERS, Wis. - Penn State women's swimming senior Melissa Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico) was named the CollegeSwimming.com Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Tuesday, the website announced. Rodriguez won a pair of events in her final competition at McCoy Natatorium Saturday.
In a dual meet against Villanova, Rodriguez helped lead a dominating performance by the Nittany Lions, winning both of the events she entered individually. She first claimed the 100 breaststroke, touching in 1:02.11. She later claimed gold in the 200 breast, touching the wall after 2:15.30. Both times were below the NCAA B-cut standard.
It was the final meet of the regular season and she was one of 15 seniors from the Penn State men's and women's swimming and diving team honored before the meet.
The Penn State men's and women's teams will next compete in the Big Ten Championships. The women will go first, traveling to Ann Arbor, Michigan, Feb. 18-20. The men will follow the next week traveling to West Lafayette, Indiana, Feb. 25-27.
