Penn State Takes Down Nebraska

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa-The Penn State women's tennis team (7-9, 3-3) took down Big Ten competitor Nebraska (17-5, 4-4) 5-2. Next, Penn State will take on Iowa, their second conference competitor of the weekend, on Sunday, April 10 at 11 a.m.

The Nittany lions put up a fight to secure the doubles point. Junior, Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) clinched the match win at No. 2 against the Huskers 6-3, 6-3.

"Nebraska is a well coached team that we always have a close match with," said head coach Chris Cagle, "Tonight was no different. We are just all really excited to come out on top with a win. The doubles point was a key to the match and us competing up and down the line lead us to a strong 5-2 win tonight."

Nebraska gained their first match point defeating Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3. Then, Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated Liza Andersson 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4. The Huskers answered with a tough defeat over Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) 7-6(3), 6-3 at No. 3. Dasha Sapogova secured a 3-2 lead for Penn State after taking down Katerina Matysova in a three set match at No. 5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Katia Blik defeated Mary Hanna at No. 2 and clinched the match win for the Nittany Lions 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles play, duo Zuhse and Whiteaway were defeated by the Huskers 6-1. Blik and Tutelman were quick to answer with a 5-4 victory over Matysova and Maddox-Herr. Surin and McCluskey clinched their tiebreaking match at No. 1 and the doubles point for Penn State.
