Women's Tennis Falls to Northwestern

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa ââ'¬" The Penn State women's tennis team (8-10, 4-4) fell to big ten competitor No. 40 Northwestern (10-8, 8-0) 6-1. Next, Penn State will host Illinois (12-7, 6-2) on their Senior Day Sunday, April 17.

"I give Northwestern credit," said head coach Chris Cagle, "I think they played a good match in singles and doubles today. We definitely had our chances up and down the lineup. We will learn from today and get ready for Illinois on Sunday. I know our team will be fired up for Senior Day."

In singles action, Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) was swept at No. 4 by Alex Chatt. Then, Nortwestern's Maddie Lipp defeated Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) 6-6, 6-2. Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) fell in her tiebreaker during her first set at No. 6 and lost the match 7-6(4), 6-1. Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) put up a fight in her three set match at No. 5 and went unfinished due to injury 6-2, 1-6, 2-1. At No. 2 Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) was defeated in her three set match against Alacia Barnett 6-3, 6-7, 11-9. Kim Surin (Montreal, Canada) gained a Nittany Lion victory at No. 1 defeating Erin Larner 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

In doubles play, Northwestern secured the doubles point. Blik and Tutelman fell at No. 2 to Rischbieth and Barnett 6-0. Duo Surin and McCluskey were defeated by Lipp and Chatt 6-4, and Zuhse and Whiteaway went unfinished at No. 3.
