FAIRFAX, VA - No. 9 Penn State (19-9, 12-2 EIVA) dropped a close match to George Mason Saturday night on the road 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 27-29) to wrap up the regular season schedule.
"We had 12 service errors, and 30 hitting errors for a total of 42 points, that a game and a half," said head coach Mark Pavlik.
"When you can't play clean and you have the opportunities that we created, it makes it real difficult and you have to play twice as hard."
Three Nittany Lions finished the night with double digit kills for Penn State led by Chris Nugent (Fair Lawn, N.J.) who racked up 11 kills on the night.
Aidan Albrecht (Old Bridge, N.J.) and Matt Seifert (Reading, Pa.) each added 10 kills while Jalen Penrose (Cambridge, Mass.) collected eight kills off the bench.
"It's real tough for a middle blocker (Matt Seifert) to put the team on his shoulders because he's in there for three rotations. He's in there, and he can be used offensively when the pass permits it, having said that, I don't know if I've seen a Penn State middle blocker lead his team as well on the court as he does off the court as Seifert. Seifert is the one guy who embraces competition, it doesn't matter who lines up on the other side of the net he's ready to compete and he's ready to play"
The loss to George Mason drops the Nittany Lions to 12-2 in EIVA conference play.
This marks the first time under coach Mark Pavlik that the Nittany Lions have lost two EIVA matches in one season.
Penn State has clinched the No. 1 seed in the EIVA semifinals and will face No. 4 seed Saint Francis (Pa) Thursday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Rec Hall as Penn State host the 2016 EIVA semifinals and championship.
