Well Played Opening Round in the Big Ten Championship

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Penn State women's golf team competed in the first round of the Big Ten Championship in Indianapolis, Ind. and shot a 288, even par. The Lions are in seventh place heading into round two.

Sophomore Ariana Coyle Diez (Mount Merrion, Dublin, Ireland) got off to a great start, carding an eagle on the par 5, hole seven, while finishing with a season-low round score of 69 3-under. Diez is tied for third in the player leaderboard.

Another Nittany Lion under par after the first round is the newcomer Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.). Playing in her first ever Big Ten Championship, Waller hit three birdies on her way to a score of 70 2-under. She is tied for 10th.

The other two players competing in their first ever Big Ten Championship, Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) and Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) also shook the nerves off and finished with good round scores. Basso shot even par through the front nine, and finished with a score of 74 plus-2. While Rogowicz, had two birdies and shot a 75 plus-3.

While the seniors Halley Morell (Brecksville, Ohio) and Grace Chung (Richmond Hill, Ontario), both shot a round score of 77 plus-5. Morell shot three birdies in the round, while Chung added another one.

Purdue University is in first place after round one, shooting a team score of 283 5-under. The Boilermakers are only one stroke ahead of the seconded place Northwestern.

Penn State tees off at 10:18 a.m. tomorrow to get the second round underway.
