Penn State Falls to Indiana

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa ââ'¬" The Penn State women's tennis team (8-13, 4-7) was defeated by Indiana (14-9, 4-5), 6-1. Penn State concluded their 2016 spring season today against the Hoosiers.

"Indiana played a little better than us today," said head coach Chris Cagle, "The singles matches were close with four three-set matches. We just did not close out enough close games today."

During singles play, Kim Surin (Montreal, Canada), Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.), Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.), and Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) all went into tough three set matches. McCluskey clinched her match at No. 3, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2. Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) dropped her match at No. 2 against Madison Appel 6-3, 6-4 and Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) fell at No. 5 6-2, 6-1.

Indiana secured the doubles point over Penn State. First, Whiteaway and Zuhse fell at No. 2 against Schmider and Smith 6-2. Then, Surin and McCluskey were defeated at No. 1, 6-3. Duo Blik and Kelly Mengel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) went unfinished at No. 3.
