UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team finished ninth in the 14-team field at the Big Ten Championships in Newburgh, Indiana.

The Lions dropped two spots in the final round while shooting a team total 296 in round three to close out the conference event while being only one of four teams with all five golfers finishing in the top-50.

"In our final push today each of our players made one to three numbers at double or more," says head coach Greg Nye. "Outside of those holes we played better than the previous two rounds."

JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) shot a 78 on the day, but still finished as the top Lion on the leaderboard in a tie for 20th at 218. Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) ended up in a tie for 28th after a 76 gave him a three-day total of 221. One shot behind Huntzinger was Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) who improved his score in each round shooting a one-over 73 to wrap up his tournament. Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) and Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) shot 73 and 74, respectively putting them in ties for 45th and 48th.

"We have to clean up our decision making in spots. We need to return to our determined play that we saw throughout the entire year," Nye continued.

Illinois shot a tournament best round of 24-under 264 on day three to clinch the team title by 13 strokes finishing with 838. Iowa finished as the only other team to come in under par at 3-under overall with 851. Maryland rounds out the top three at 866.

The Illini finished with the top two individual players as Thomas Detry and Charlie Danielson finished at 10-under and 9-under. Michigan's Kyle Mueller ended up with a 7-under 209 before two Hawkeyes round out the top five.

The next time the Lions could return to the links would be for the NCAA Regional contest. The Golf Channel will be broadcasting the selection show on Thursday, May 5th, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
