LUBBOCK, Texas ââ'¬" The current NCAA leader for earned run average, senior reliever Jack Anderson (Evanston, Ill.) was one of 72 pitchers named to the watch list for the National Pitcher of the Year Award, presented by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
The award, sponsored by Diamond, will be presented on July 2 in Lubbock as part of the annual Night of Champions event. Anderson is one of six pitchers from the Big Ten on the list.
The submarine-style closer is rewriting the Penn State record books this season. He is extending the career record for appearances with 91 so far, and he tied the school's career save record with his 22nd Sunday. For the season, Anderson leads the country with a 0.65 ERA in 41 1/3 innings pitched, and he leads the Big Ten and ranks eighth nationally with a career-high 10 saves, which is one shy of the school single-season record. Anderson also boasts a 4-1 record and his 22 appearances on the year rank second in the Big Ten and 22nd in the country.
It is the second watch list Anderson has been named to, as he was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year preseason watch list.
Penn State will next host Kent State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. It will be both $1 hot dog night and Champions Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, as Penn State's women's soccer and wrestling teams will be honored for their NCAA National Championships, and many others will be recognized for individual accomplishments.
