UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa -- In the heat of their conference play, the Penn State women's tennis team (6-9, 2-3) picked up a Big Ten conference win defeating Rutgers (6-10, 0-6) 4-3.
After Rutgers secured the doubles point, the Nittany Lions came back and clinched the match during singles play.
"Today was a battle," said head coach Chris Cagle, "It is never easy to win on the road in the Big Ten so I was happy with how we put the doubles point behind us and moved on in singles. We look forward to being home for our next few matches."
Junior, Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) clinched the match win for Penn State defeating Chloe Lee 7-5,6-3. Samantha Tutelman (New York, NY) clinched her match at No. 6 6-0, 6-1 against Farris Cunningham. At No. 4 senior, Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) defeated Mariam Zein 6-4, 6-4. At No. 3 Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) clinched her match against Ksenija Tihomirova 7-6(5), 6-1. Rutgers opponent Gina Li defeated Kim Surin (Montreal, Canada) at No. 1 in a three set match 7-5, 5-7, 10-4. Katherine Whiteaway dropped her match 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles action, Kim Surin and Dasha Sapogova dropped their match at No. 3 6-2. Katia Blik and Samantha Tutelman fell at No. 2 6-2. At No. 1 Jacqueline Zuhse and Katherine Whiteaway did not finish their match.
