July 5, 2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; July 5, 2016 ââ'¬" Penn State men's golf standout Charles Huntzinger earned a big amateur tournament victory this past weekend near his hometown and recently was recognized as an honorable-mention All-American.

A native of Duluth, Ga., Huntzinger captured the Dogwood Invitational at 17-under at the Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta. Huntzinger shot a four-under 68 in the final round to win by one shot, posting rounds of 67-66-70-68=271. The Dogwood Invitational is similar in stature in Georgia to the Sunnehanna Amateur, held every June in Johnstown, Pa.

The 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Huntzinger also has been selected an honorable-mention All-American by Golfweek. He previously was selected second-team All-Big Ten and earned a spot on the PING All-Northeast Region Team, announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Huntzinger helped the Nittany Lions, coached by Greg Nye, to their 22nd NCAA Championship regional appearance in May. A pair of former Penn State men's golf student-athletes and 2010 graduates, Kevin Foley and T.J. Howe, participated in last month's U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in suburban Pittsburgh.
