PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - No. 18 Penn State field hockey grabbed an early lead and never relinquished it as they defeated Temple 8-1 Friday night at Howarth Field in Philadelphia.
In the ninth minute, the Nittany Lions struck first with a goal from Brooke Birosik (Ickesburg, Pa.), assisted by Kirsten Gouchnaur (Mount Joy, Pa.) and Moria Putsch (Media, Pa.) off the penalty corner attempt, to take the lead 1-0 over the Owls. Penn State would not trail during any point of Friday's game.
Kasey Morano (Hammonton, N.J.) was the next Lion to find the back of the cage, as she got past the Temple defense to push the Lions lead to 2-0.
Following an assist on Birosik's first goal, Putsch was able to score a goal of her own, with an assist from Aurelia Meijer (Hattem, Netherland) extending the Nittany Lions to 3-0.
Temple found their first and only goal of the game in the 28th minute as they cut the margin to 3-1.
Penn State came out of the half on the attack, as Putsch found her way to the back of the cage for the second time this game, tying her career high of two goals for the fourth-time in her career and pushing the score to 4-1 in favor of Penn State.
Adding to her goal from earlier in the game, Birosik scored two more goals in the second half (61', and 65') to extend the Lions lead to 7-1.
Birosik's second goal was unassisted; however, Madison Morano assisted her third goals. This was the second time Birosik has scored three goals in a game in her career and tied a career high.
Gini Bramley (Elizabethtown, Pa.) scored the final goal of game brining the final score to 8-1 in favor of Penn State.
The last time Penn State scored eight goals in the game was Sept. 14, 2012 in a 8-0 win over Lehigh.
Penn State will travel to Easton, Pa. for a neutral match against No.9 Albany Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET from Rappolt Field.
