Nittany Lions Claim 5th Place at East & West Match

Sept. 20, 2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State women's golf team goes undefeated in match play, winning again today against UC Davis 3-2 to claim fifth place in the East & West Match Play Challenge.

Sophomore Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) topped off an impressive first tournament by beating her opponent by an even larger margin than yesterday's match. Waller won with four holes still left to play, 5-and-4.

The other sophomores Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) and Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) also played well throughout the tournament and finished it off by beating their opponents with a hole still to go. Rogowicz won 3-and-1, while Basso won 2-and-1.

Newcomers Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) and Ashni Dhruva (Katy, Texas) both came up short today, but it does not take away from their solid debut collegiate tournament. Herr was in a close match again that went down to the wire, but came up short losing 1-up, while Dhruva was defeated 3-and-2 by Rei Nakatani from UC Davis.

The Nittany Lions improved on last year's performance at this tournament where they finished sixth in the standings after losing 4-0-1 to SMU.

Individual player Kate Granahan (Allentown, Pa.) competed in the third and fourth place match-up today, and was defeated 2-and-1 to the fourth seeded Ali Nageotte from Wisconsin. Granahan still walked away with a fourth place finish in the individual bracket.

Wisconsin defeated Oregon 3-2, to win the third annual East & West Match Play Challenge.

Penn State travels back to University Park, Pa. for their only home tournament of the 2016-17 season this upcoming weekend.
