Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Nittany Lions earned their second Big Ten win of the season as they defeated No. 8 Michigan (7-2, 2-1 B1G) 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Ocker Field.
"We really just got refocused after the loss at Northwestern," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss.
"It was a great team effort today, it was key to come out and get that quick goal. It was a great play coming down the right side that Moira ended up putting right to the goalkeeper and Brooke finished it."
"The composure on the corner attempts today was awesome, Michigan kept fighting but Jenny Rizzo was outstanding as was the whole defense. I felt as a team we improved our composure."
No. 4 Penn State (9-1, 2-1 B1G) took an early lead as Brooke Birosik (Ickesburg, Pa.) found her way to the back of the cage in the first minute of game play.
With help from Moira Putsch (Media, Pa.), Birosik was able to get the ball right in front of the cage and tipped it in for the first goal of the game.
In the seventh minute of game play, Birosik fired a shot that was initially blocked by a defender, Aurelia Meijer (Hattem, Netherlands) recovered the loose ball and passed it Katie Dembroswiki who was able to put it in the back of the cage for her first goal of the game.
Entering the second half, the Nittany Lions led 2-0. In the 61st minute, Michigan (7-2, 2-1) scored a goal cutting the Nittany Lions Lead in half.
Birosik answered Michigan's goal by scoring her second goal of the game. With less than four minutes remaining in the second half a penalty corner attempt with an insert from Moria Putsch (Media, Pa.) and an assist from Katie Dembrowski (Palmyra, Pa.) who placed the ball exactly where Birosik needed it combined for final goal of the game and her second of the game.
Jenny Rizzo (Hershey, Pa.) recorded a season high nine saves helping Penn State improves to 9-1 on the season and a 2-1 record in Big Ten play.
Penn State has now defeated five ranked teams this season including wins over No. 20 Old Dominion, No. 5 Virginia, No. 9 UAlbany and No. 16 Iowa.
Penn State returns to Happy Valley to host Michigan State Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. at Field Hockey Complex.
