UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Penn State women's golf team travels to Hanahan, S.C. this weekend to compete in the 14th annual Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston.
The three-day tournament is being played at the Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C. and will begin Sunday and conclude Tuesday.
Head coach Denise St. Pierre will be traveling with sophomores Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.), Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) and Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.). As well as the newcomer Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.), and senior Kate Granahan (Allentown, Pa.), who is making her first start of the season.
The Lions will be competing against 20 other schools, the largest field they have seen this year. Michigan, Maryland, Indiana, and Wisconsin will join Penn State in representing the Big Ten.
The rest of the field rounds out to be: Arkansas, Auburn, UCF, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Furman, Louisville, Mississippi State, North Carolina, NC State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest.
This will be the Nittany Lions ninth appearance in the Cougar Classic. Their best finish came in 2012 and 2013 when they finished 13th.
Some tournament notes on the Cougar Classic are that Arkansas looks to become the first team to win three Cougar Classics in a row. Also headlining the field are seven teams ranked inside the Top 30 at the end of last season.
The Cougar Classic has never had a two-time individual championship winner, although last year's co-medalist Alice Hewson from Clemson, returns this year with the opportunity to become the first. There have also been 13 total individual winners from 12 different schools. Florida is the only school to have multiply individual medalists.
On Sunday, Penn State will be joined in a group with Maryland and Charleston Southern teeing off 12:35 p.m.
Live scoring will be available through golfstat.com.
