UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's hockey team fell 7-2 to the Boston University Terriers inside the Pegula Ice Arena Saturday afternoon.
"Honestly, in so many ways today was a day of skating uphill," head coach Josh Brandwene said. "When you get yourself down a little bit you see what kind of hockey team you have and I was really pleased with the response, especially in the second period. It was in many ways one of our best periods of the year. We had great scoring chances. Sometimes they fall, sometimes they don't and I'm still proud of this hockey team for their effort."
For the Nittany Lions (1-4-1), Aly Hardy (St. Albans, Vt.) and Abby Welch (East Amherst, N.Y.) each tallied their first career goal. In net for the Blue and White, Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) made eight saves and Daniela Paniccia (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) recorded 22 saves.
BU (3-1-1) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead just 3:25 into the game on a pair of goals from Mary Parker. Parker opened up the scoring with her first goal of the game at 53 seconds. Down 1-0, Hardy scored off an assist from Brooke Madsen (Eagan, Minn.) to even the game at one at 3:05. BU then responded 20 seconds later to retake the lead on Parker's second goal of the game.
The Terriers took a 3-1 lead into the second period on Sammy Davis' first goal of the season with 5:00 left in the opening frame.
Penn State then cut the deficit to one on Welch's goal at 6:13 into the second stanza. From the blue line, Welch fired a shot past BU goaltender Victoria Hanson with assists from Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minn.).
With the 3-2 lead, BU scored three times down the final 9:09 of the second period. Parker completed her hat trick on the power play with 9:09 left in the second frame before BU scored twice within a two-minute span at 4:00 (Connor Galway) and 2:01 (Maddie Elia).
BU closed out the game with Mary Grace Kelley scoring her first goal of the season with 15 seconds left in regulation.
Penn State heads to Storrs, Conn., next weekend to begin a three-series road trip. The Nittany Lions and UConn Huskies take to the ice Oct. 21-22.
