ROSEMONT, ILL. - Freshman goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) has been tabbed the Big Ten men's hockey Third Star of the Week for his performance during a 7-0 victory at Mercyhurst this past weekend.
Jones turned aside all 20 shots he faced to pick up his first collegiate shutout. The rookie net-minder collected 12 of those saves during the final period and made 11 saves to help the penalty-kill unit go a perfect 9-for-9 in the game.
Two of those PK's were extended 5-on-3 efforts and overall on the young season the Penn State PK is a perfect 15-for-15, one of just three teams in the nation to remain perfect through the first two weeks of the regular season.
The shutout was the first for Penn State since a 4-0 victory over Vermont last November in the Philadelphia College Hockey Face-off. It was also the first road shutout for the Nittany Lions since their inagural Division I season in 2012.
Jones has started all three games so far this season and sits at 2-0-0 heading into this weekend's series with Notre Dame. The freshman currently holds a .914 save percentage and a 2.41 goals against average in 124:15 of ice time through the opening two weeks of the season.
The rookie becomes the first Penn State honoree since David Goodwin earned Third Star accolades on February 23, 2016.
