UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 5 Nittany Lion field hockey team recorded four goals scored by four different players as they notched their 11th win of the season against No. 11 Princeton Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey complex.
Princeton (6-4, 2-0 Ivy League) struck first as Krista Hoffman scored in the ninth minute of game play giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Penn State (11-1, 3-1 B1G) answered Princeton's goal with a goal of their own as Moira Putsch (Media, Pa.) sparked a 4-1 run the Nittany Lions.
A minute after Princeton's Hoffman scored the first goal of the game, Putsch floated a shot over the goalkeeper to tie up the game at 1-1.
Putsch went on to assist Aurelia Meijer (Hattem, Netherlands) for the Nittany Lion goal.
Putsch again passed across the circle to Meijer who ultimately put the ball in the back of the cage giving the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead.
The duo of Bes Bovelander (Overveen, Netherlands) and Brooke Birosik (Ickesburg, Pa.) scored the final goal of the first half. With less than six minutes left of the clock Bovelander sent the ball to
Birosik went on to score her eighth goal of the season.
Bovelander's assist was the first of her career as the goal by Birosik gave Penn State a 3-1 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, Penn State would be the first to strike as Kristen Gochnauer (Mount Joy, Pa.), assist by Putsch, was able to get the ball past the goalie giving the Nittany Lions a 4-1 advantage.
Penn State held Princeton at one until Jane Donio-Enscoe was able to find back of the cage, cutting the Nittany Lions lead to 4-2.
Penn State is now 26-10 all-time versus Princeton dating back to 1979.
Penn State has now defeated six ranked teams this season including wins over No. 20 Old Dominion, No. 5 Virginia, No. 9 UAlbany, No. 16 Iowa, No. 8 Michigan and No. 11 Princeton.
The Nittany Lions will return to action to face off against Big Ten opponent Ohio State Thursday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m.
