STORRS, Conn. - The Penn State women's hockey team and the UConn Huskies played to a 0-0 tie Friday night inside the Freitas Ice Forum.
Behind a 33-save performance, Daniela Paniccia (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) recorded the first solo shutout by a Nittany Lion freshman goaltender in program history. For the Huskies (3-2-1), netminder Annie Belanger kept the Nittany Lion offense off the board with 39 saves.
Offensively, the Nittany Lions (1-4-2) were paced by Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minn.) and Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.). The Nittany Lion trio of Bowman, Sutton and Petersen each tallied six shot attempts.
On the night, Penn State outshot UConn, 39-33, which included nine shot attempts for the Nittany Lions during the five-minute overtime period.
Penn State and UConn combined for 10 power play attempts, including a pair of 4-on-4 opportunities during the third period and early in the extra frame.
The Nittany Lions and Huskies close out the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. inside the Freitas Ice Forum.
NOTES: UConn leads the all-time series, 2-0-1...Penn State went 0-for-6 on the power play, while UConn went 0-for-4...The scoreless tie Friday night was the first for the Nittany Lions in program history...The tie marked Penn State's second overtime contest in the past three games.
