EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Penn State women's soccer team fell to the Michigan State Spartans, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the DeMartin Soccer Complex. Penn State outshot Michigan State, 28-10, on the afternoon.
The Nittany Lions fall to 10-3-4 on the year and 6-1-3 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State improves to 6-10-1 overall and 3-7-0 in conference action.
Despite outshooting the Spartans, 15-6, during the first half of play, the Spartans connected on two of their three shots on goal.
Michigan State took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Morgan McKerchie at 19:51 and then the Spartans added to their lead in the 43rd minute as Jamie Cheslik netted her first goal of the game.
The Nittany Lions best chance to get on the scoreboard during the first half came from Megan Schafer (Langhorne, Pa.). With 10:35 remaining in the opening half, Schafer hit the crossbar from just inside the penalty area on the left side of the field.
The second half of play featured the Nittany Lions outshooting the Spartans, 13-4.
Penn State cut the Michigan State lead to 2-1 with under five minutes to play in regulation as junior Frannie Crouse (Greensburg, Pa.) connected on her 12th goal of the season with an assist from Haleigh Echard (Lebanon, Pa.).
With the Blue and White looking for the equalizer during the final stretch of regulation, Cheslik scored her second goal of the game on a breakaway with 33 seconds left to secure a 3-1 victory for Michigan State.
Michigan State goalkeeper Savanna Wojtanowski finished the afternoon with 14 saves, while Amanda Dennis (San Diego, Calif.) recorded one save for Penn State.
The Nittany Lions close out the 2016 regular season at Jeffrey Field against Ohio State on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m.
