ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Penn State women's hockey team opened its 2016-17 College Hockey America (CHA) slate with a 2-0 win over the RIT Tigers Thursday night inside Ritter Arena.

The Nittany Lions (2-5-2, 1-0-0 CHA) were led offensively by seniors Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) as they each scored one goal and recorded one assist. In net for the Blue and White, freshman Daniela Paniccia (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) made 29 saves en route to her second-career shutout.

The Nittany Lions fired 20 shots on RIT (1-8-0, 0-1-0 CHA) goaltender Terra Lanteigne during the first period. The 20th, and final, shot attempt of the first period proved to be the difference for the Nittany Lions heading into the first intermission. With just 0.9 seconds left in the opening frame, Bowman netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead. Freshman Brooke Madsen (Eagan, Minn.) and Petersen were credited with assists on the Bowman goal.

Petersen then added to the Nittany Lion advantage at the 6:18 mark in the second period on her second-career short-handed goal. On the Petersen goal, Bowman recorded her fifth assist of the season.

With 4:38 left in regulation, Paniccia kept the Tigers off the scoreboard with a save on Claudia Black on a 2-on-1 scoring opportunity.

The two teams close out the series Friday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. inside the Gene Polisseni Center.
