UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 19 Penn State men's ice hockey team begins a 10-game home stand to close out the fall 2016 semester as they welcome the Canisius College Golden Griffins to Pegula Ice Arena for a pair of 7 p.m. affairs on Friday and Saturday evening.

Tickets for both games remain as standing room only can be purchased by calling 1-800-NITTANY and scattered single seats as well as re-sale tickets can be bought by visiting ticketmaster.com and searching Pegula Ice Arena.

GAME PROGRAMS
Programs for each contest will be available for $1.00 and will be sold at a kiosk inside Gate A as well as at the Hockey Valley Team Shop located behind section 116. Cash only sellers will also be patrolling the concourse and the club level giving you additional chances to purchase programs.
THIS WEEK'S MATCHUP
Penn State welcomes Canisius College to Pegula Ice Arena for the first-time this weekend as they play a pair of 7 p.m. contests against the Golden Griffins on Friday and Saturday evening.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Nittany Lions travelled to Buffalo to open the 2015-16 campaign with a 6-1 win over the Griffs.
- Senior Ricky DeRosa potted what would eventually become the game-winner while sophomore Chase Berger registered the first goal of his collegiate career in the first period as Penn State opened up a 5-0 advantage through two periods before Canisius got on the board.
- David Glen `16 scored twice while Curtis Loik `16 and senior David Goodwin added the other scores for the 6-1 final.
THE HOUSES PEGULA BUILT
- Buffalo Sabres owner and PSU Alumnus Terry Pegula was the driving factor behind funding both the Pegula Ice Arena and the HARBORCENTER in Buffalo which is home to the Golden Griffins.
- The $172.2 million HARBORCENTER has been the home to the Griffs since the 2014-15 season just one year after the $98 million Pegula Ice Arena opened its doors for Penn State in 2013-14.
SCOUTING CANISIUS
This marks the second straight season that the Nittany Lions and Golden Griffins will face-off after a single contest last year at the HarborCenter which the Lions won 6-1.
- Canisius finished 12-22-5 last season including a 10-13-5 mark in Atlantic Hockey finishing seventh in the league standings. They hosted Niagara in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Hockey Championship and won the series in three games. However, their season ended the following weekend as they were swept by Air Force in the semifinals.
- The Griffs bid farewell to their top two scorers on last season's roster as Ralph Cuddemi graduated while Shane Conacher decided to forego his senior season and signed a deal with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. Both Conacher and Cuddemi potted 20 goals last season accounting for 43% of the Canisius offense.
- Luckily for the Golden Griffins the next eight players who registered double-digit points last season where either freshman or sophomores including this year's leading scorers Felix Chamberland and Ryan Schmelzer.
- Chamberland and Schmelzer each have five points while Chamberland leads the way with three goals to Schmelzer's two.
- Chamberland was named Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week after scoring a hat-trick during a 6-3 victory over Robert Morris last Friday night.
- The Griffs have a few new faces between the pipes this season and are led by graduate student Charles Williams who spent the last four seasons on the roster at Ferris State. Williams has started four games and posted a 2-1-1 record with a 2.43 goals against average and .927 save percentage. Williams was also named Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the week after a 1-0-1 weekend against Bobby Mo.
- Both Williams' .927 save percentage and 2.43 GAA are good for third in Atlantic Hockey early on in the season.
- Canisius possesses one of the best defenses in Atlantic Hockey only allowing 2.83 goals per contest, however, their offense ranks last in the league only putting up 1.83 goals per game over their first six contests.
- The Girffs also have one of the better power-plays in the conference as they have converted 7-of-31 for 22.6 percent good for second in Atlantic Hockey. Their penalty-kill, however, is more middle-of-the-pack as they have killed off 24-of-30 at an 80 percent clip.
UPSET CITY
- The win on Saturday over No. 3 Notre Dame marks the highest ranked opponent Penn State has ever defeated in their brief history. it is also the second top-5 ranked opponent they have taken down as they also defeated No. 4 UMass-Lowell, 4-1, On November 15, 2014.
- The win against the Riverhawks was the 200th in the coaching career for Guy Gadowsky. The Penn State Bench Boss currently has 236 career victories after Saturday's win.
- Both of those victories have come on the road as the highest ranked team the Lions have defeated at home was No. 10 Michigan on February 8, 2014 a 4-0 shutout victory. The shutout is currently the only such game against a nationally ranked opponent.
GOING STREAKING
- A pair of Nittany Lion newcomers have announced their presence with authority so far this season as both freshman forward Denis Smirnov and junior defenseman Trevor Hamilton are riding 5-game point streaks, registering at least one point in each game so far this season for the Blue and White.
- Both players have registered one goal and five assists for six points to tie sophomore Chase Berger for the team lead through the first five games.
- All three players currently tie for the Big Ten lead with their five assists while Hamilton leads all Big Ten defensemen in scoring with his six points.
- Smirnov is also tied for the Big Ten lead for freshman scoring.
JONES EARNS B1G FIRST STAR
- Freshman goaltender Peyton Jones showed extreme poise and confidence in net this past weekend against one of the top offenses in the country. In doing so his performance earned him the Big Ten First Star of the week.
- This is the second consecutive week the rookie has been honored after taking home Third Star accolades last week following his first collegiate shutout.
- For Penn State he becomes the fourth player to earn First Star recognition and first since another goaltender, Eamon McAdam, earned that distinction last December.
LEAGUE LEADERS
- With four goals on the season both sophomore Andrew Sturtz and freshman Nate Sucese are tied for the Big Ten lead while the two game-winning goals off the stick of Sturtz place him in solo-first in the league.
PUCK ON NET
- Something Penn State does not struggle with is getting off shots as they are always toward the league lead in shots per game and this year is no different. Through the opening three weeks of play the Lions are currently leading the nation averaging 38.6 shots per contest.
- Their 4.0 goals per game also places them top-10 in the country as they sit at seventh.
PENN STATE FEATURED ON TOP PLAYS
- For the second time over the first three weeks of the regular season the Nittany Lions have had a play on NCAA Ice Hockey's Top-5 Plays of the Week.
- It comes as no surprise as it was the overtime winner against Notre Dame by Andrew Sturtz, who is also making his second appearance on Top Plays.
- The play came in a #5 after they captured the top spot during the opening weekend.
RECAPPING NOTRE DAME
Penn State never trailed in the series against the Fighting Irish as they scored early each night even possessing a two-goal lead at one point on Friday night.
- Senior Dylan Richard collected the 13th multi-point game of his career with his two goals on Friday while freshman Nikita Pavlychev scored the opening goal for the second straight game after starting the scoring the previous weekend against Mercyhurst.
- Jones collected a career-high 30-saves on Friday night.
- The penalty kill unit went a perfect 9-for-9 on Friday for the second straight game as they started the season a perfect 26-for-26 before Notre Dame broke through on Saturday night.
- Junior James Robinson collected his first goal since March 14, 2015 as he opened the scoring on Saturday night.
- Freshman Nate Sucese collected his team-leading fourth goal of the season which was later matched by Sturtz with his overtime game-winner for the 3-2 victory just 1:20 into the extra session.
- The Nittany Lions are riding a modest three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1).
BREAKING INTO THE POLLS
- After a win and a tie against then No. 3 Notre Dame, Penn State made their season debut in the uscho.com top-20 coming in at No. 19 to open the week.
- This marks the first time since March 14, 2016 that the Nittany Lions have been nationally ranked.
HOME SWEET HOME
- After back-to-back weeks on the road Penn State returns home for the remainder of the fall 2016 semester as they host 10-consecutive games inside the friendly confines of Pegula Ice Arena
- The Lions next hit the road on January 6-7 when they travel to Ohio State to resume Big Ten Conference play following the semester break.
NEXT TIME OUT
- Penn State remains home to battle another Atlantic Hockey foe when the Niagara Purple Eagles travel to Pegula Ice Arena for a pair of games
- This marks just the second and third games between the two schools after their 1-1 tie last season in Niagara Falls.
