UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Penn State women's golf team competed in round two at the Cougar Classic shooting a 294 plus-6 on the day. The Lions head into the final round tied in 13th place with Chattanooga with a score of 585.
Not often, this occurs but heading into the final round, four of the five players on the Nittany Lions have a total score of 147 plus-3. The team continues to play well but the tough field makes it hard to move up in the standings.
The team was led by sophomore Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) who shot 3-under through the first nine, to finish with a round score of 71 1-under. Basso led the team with five birdies on the day.
For the second straight day, sophomore Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) and newcomer Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) put up the same score, this time a stroke better than round one. They both shot a 73 plus-1 and have played consistently well all tournament.
While sophomore Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) and senior Kate Granahan (Allentown, Pa.) also both shot a 77 plus-5 in round two. Rogowicz, Waller, Herr, and Basso all enter the final round with a total score of 147 plus-3.
Furman and North Carolina separated from the rest of the pack in round two. Furman is in the lead with a team score of 558 18-under and is only one stroke ahead of North Carolina. However, the two teams tied for third place are eight strokes behind the Tar Heels.
If the Nittany Lions move up just one spot in the standings in the final round they will have earned a new best finish at the Cougar Classic, which is currently 13th. The final round will begin tomorrow with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.
