UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Penn State women's golf team played in the final round of the 14th annual Cougar Classic and shot a 297 plus-9, for a total tournament score of 882 to finish in 16th place.
All players on the Nittany Lions shot very similar scores throughout the tournament, having only a spread of five strokes separating the lowest tournament score of 219 plus-3 and the highest of 224 plus-8.
Sophomore Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) recorded the lowest total score for the team and led the way in the final round shooting a 72 even par. Waller recorded an eagle on the par five, hole 15, along with four birdies to finish tied for 34th in the player leaderboard.
Senior Kate Granahan (Allentown, Pa.) and newcomer Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) both finished the tournament with a total score of 224. Granahan had a solid final round shooting four birdies on her way to a 74 plus-2 round score. While Herr, recorded two birdies and shot a 77 plus-5 on the round.
Sophomore Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) shot a 76, 71, and 75 respectively in her three rounds to finish with the second lowest total score on the team of 222 plus-6. While sophomore Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) totaled a 223 plus-7, shooting a 74, 73, and 76 in her three rounds.
North Carolina edges out Furman to win the Cougar Classic with a new tournament-low score of 838 26-under. This is the Tar Heels second title win at the Cougar Classic.
North Carolina's Kelly Whaley claimed the individual medalist honors shooting 11-under par for the tournament, beating South Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh by a stroke.
Penn State has a three-week break before traveling to Wilmington, N.C. to compete in the Landfall Tradition. This will be the Lions final tournament of the fall season.
