SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Penn State women's hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision against the Union Dutchwomen Saturday afternoon inside the Messa Rink. In the loss, Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Kelly Seward (Williamsville, N.Y.) each recorded one goal and one assist.
The Dutchwomen (1-4-0) and Nittany Lions (1-3-0) went into the second period tied at one. Union opened up the scoring in the first period at 9:05 on Emily Erickson's first goal of the 2016-17 season. With under four minutes to play in the opening period, Seward recorded her first goal of the year on the power play.
The second period of play featured the Dutchwomen take a 3-1 lead on a pair of goals from Haley Shugart at 1:28 and 12:58, respectively. At 14:15 in the second period, Bowman cut the Union lead to one with her fourth goal of the weekend.
Erickson then tallied her second goal of the game at 15:51 in the third period to put the Dutchwomen up 4-2.
In net for the Nittany Lions, Daniela Paniccia (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) recorded 21 saves, while Kate Spooner made 24 saves for Union.
The Nittany Lions host their first home series of the 2016-17 season next weekend, Oct. 14-15, against the Boston University Terriers. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m.
NOTES: Penn State leads the all-time series against Union, 5-4-1...Penn State has scored at least one power play goal in each of the four games in 2016-17...Penn State went 1-for-8 on the power play, while Union went for 3-for-10...The Nittany Lions outshot Union, 26-25...In the Union series, Bowman recorded six points (4-2-6), Amy Petersen tallied five points (3-2-5) and Seward posted four points (1-3-4).
