SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Penn State women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to College Hockey America (CHA) opponent Syracuse Saturday afternoon inside the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
The Nittany Lions (5-15-4, 4-5-1 CHA) took a 1-0 lead over Syracuse (7-10-5, 6-2-2 CHA) at the 9:30 mark in the second period on freshman Abby Welch's (East Amherst, N.Y.) third career goal.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the third period, Syracuse found the back of the net three times during the first 5:29 of the period.
For the Syracuse offense in the third period, Allie Munroe tied the game at 1-1 at 0:37, Laurence Porlier then put the Orange up 2-1 at 1:58 and Munroe netted her second goal of the game to extend the lead to 3-1 at 5:29.
With 55 seconds left in regulation, Brooke Avery recorded an empty-net goal, securing the 4-1 victory for the Orange.
In net for the Nittany Lions, freshman Daniela Paniccia (Oakville, Ontario) recorded a 30-save performance, while Abbey Miller made 14 saves for Syracuse.
Penn State returns home to the Pegula Ice Arena for a four-game homestand starting with RIT on Jan. 21-22. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. each day.
