2017 Hockey Humanitarian Award Nominees

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Men's ice hockey senior captain David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) doesn't only lead on the ice, but it's his actions off the ice that have made him a nominee for the 2017 Hockey Humanitarian Award, as announced by the Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Goodwin is one of 15 student-athletes nominated for the award as he joins Penn State women's hockey player Sarah Nielsen on this year's ballot.

The Foundation and its long-time lead sponsor BNY Mellon Wealth Management present the award annually to college hockey's finest citizen -- a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team, but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.

Along with his participation in THON and other local community efforts, Goodwin has sacrificed part of his summer for each of the last three years to travel to a different country and help improve the quality of life.

Along with trips to Spain, El Salvador and Nicaragua, David Goodwin sacrificed spent time in Mexico and most recently Cuba over the past two summers.

"I learned just as much from them as they learned from me," said Goodwin about his time teaching English in Cuba last summer.

Goodwin, a double major in Spanish and Economics and two-time All-Big Ten Academic Team honoree, is also a nominee for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award.

Finalists for both awards will be announced in February and the 2017 recipient will be recognized in a ceremony during the Frozen Four in Chicago.
