UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" Sophomore wrestler Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas) has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 22, 2017. The honor is the third for Nickal, who won twice last year, and the second for Penn State this season.
Nickal continued to blaze his way through the 2016-17 season, this time sticking Iowa's Sammy Brooks, ranked No. 5 nationally, for a pin just :38 into his match in Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. Nickal countered a Brooks shot, locked Brooks up on his back and got the quick pin to silence a raucous Iowa crowd. The victory helped to spark Penn State to a dominating 26-11 win at No. 3 Iowa.
Nickal improved to 12-0 with the win and the pin was his 10th of the year in just 12 bouts. The Nittany Lions are now 8-0 on the year, 4-0 in the Big Ten, and have won 25 straight duals dating back to the end of the 2014-15 campaign. Iowa is 7-2, 3-1 B1G. Penn State has won in Iowa City in its last two trips to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. This is Penn State's second conference weekly honor of the year. Jason Nolf (Yatesboro, Pa.) won the weekly honor (1/8/17) as well.
Penn State travels Wisconsin for another Big Ten road dual on Friday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central. Two days later, Penn State returns to Rec Hall on Sunday, Jan. 29, for a 2 p.m. dual with the Northwestern Wildcats.
