UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State University and head women's lacrosse coach Missy Doherty announced earlier Friday afternoon that longtime assistant Amy Altig has been promoted to Associate Head Coach entering the 2017 season.
Altig has spent the last six seasons under Doherty as both came to Happy Valley before the start of the 2011 season. This marks the seventh season the duo has shared together after Altig joined the Nittany Lions after three seasons as an assistant coach at Princeton.
"It is because of Amy's work ethic that our program continues to improve at the national level," mentioned Doherty. "She has been a crucial part of our program by heading up our recruiting efforts and bringing in some of the top talent in the country."
Altig, a standout goalkeeper during her playing days at James Madison, has been crucial in the development of goaltenders while at PSU helping guide Emi Smith '16 to All-Region and All-American status as well as the 2015 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year. Altig also works closely with the defense.
"First of all I'd like to thank Penn State University, Missy Doherty, and our amazing Administration for this opportunity. It is truly an honor to represent Penn State and work with our incredible student athletes," commented Altig. "Our goal has always been to develop strong women, positively impact their lives for the better, and to prepare them for the next chapter in life. I love coming to work each day and being able to work alongside the best staff in the country. Penn State has provided me not only a place of employment but also a family that I will have for a lifetime. I am very proud and excited to continue in my pursuit of excellence with this very special program. There really is no place like Penn State and I am extremely grateful to call this place my home."
"I'm lucky to have her as a peer, and she certainly is well deserving of the Associate Head Coach position," concluded Doherty.
Penn State begins their 2017 season as they host the Albany Great Danes on Saturday February 4 at 12 p.m.
