UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" Penn State sophomore Hector Garcia Boissier (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) won the men's 1-meter and senior Mackenzie Cornell (Germantown, Md.) won the women's 3-meter to lead a strong Nittany Lions showing on the first day of the Penn State Zone A Diving Invitational Saturday afternoon in McCoy Natatorium.

Garcia and Cornell led from the preliminaries through the finals, and Penn State placed three in the top eight for finals on the men's and women's sides. Scoring started over in the finals and there was no team scoring.

Garcia was consistent, totaling 396.95 on his first six dives in the preliminaries and 394.75 in the finals. Connor Scanlon (Laurel, Md.) and Jack Crow (Bethesda, Md.) placed third (291.15) and fourth (281.45), respectively, with their top scores of the day coming in the finals. Drexel's Dylan Yurasits was second with a finals score of 327.20.

Cornell was also consistent, leading the way in the prelims with a score of 305.50 and again in the finals with a score of 302.60. She faced competition from Drexel's Madison Kramer, who placed second at 294.15. Penn State freshman Christina Crowell (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) made a big improvement from the prelims to the finals, placing third in the finals with a zone regional qualifying score of 289.95 and after ranking fourth in the prelims at 228.25. Classmate Elaina Faerber (Potomac, Md.) improved in the finals as well, posting a score of 247.00 to place fifth.

Competition will resume Sunday at 11 a.m. with the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter.
